The Atlantic's giant current is slowing, and the ocean may be getting stranger than expected. Researchers have long treated North Atlantic salinity as background noise in the climate system, focusing on temperature's role. However, a new study challenges this view, revealing a surprising twist: as the Atlantic's overturning circulation weakens, the region's salt balance may swing harder than ever recorded. This shift from temperature to salinity as the primary threat is a significant finding. Climate scientist Tomoki Iwakiri of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa led the study, using eight leading climate models to project outcomes by 2300 under unchecked fossil fuel use. The findings are alarming, with the AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) weakening and the Gulf Stream losing speed, leading to a widening gap between salty southern and fresher northern water. This salt gap is what fuels the traveling wave of salinity swings, which are expected to grow more than fivefold by 2300, with extreme swings occurring three to four times as often. These swings are unique, oscillating between salty and fresh and growing as they travel, driven by both salt and heat. The study names this phenomenon the North Atlantic Salinity Oscillation, cycling roughly every ten years. The implications are profound, especially for Europe's coasts, where sea levels are expected to rise and coastal flooding risk to increase. The AMOC's slowdown also sharpens European heatwaves and threatens coastal marshes. The study highlights the need to understand and prepare for these changes, as the ocean's response to warming may be stranger than anticipated. The research, published in Nature Communications, underscores the urgency of addressing climate change and its complex impacts on our planet.
