Heartbreak House at the Shaw Festival is a captivating yet complex play that delves into the lives of the English aristocracy, offering a unique perspective on the human condition. As an expert commentator, I find myself drawn to the play's intricate web of relationships and its subtle commentary on societal norms. The play, written by Bernard Shaw, presents a meandering tale of bourgeois blues, where the audience is taken on a journey through the lives of the wealthy and their romantic entanglements. The production, directed by Tim Carroll, is a study in contrast, with the first act being lively and funny, while the second half feels endless and rubbery, like a mechanical turtle forever in search of its next sunning spot. The play's genius lies in its Chekhovian approach to plot, where things happen, relationships splinter, and a burglar makes a half-hearted attempt at robbing the Shotover estate. However, Shaw is not particularly interested in the superficial trimmings of well-to-do romance. Instead, he frames the human drama within a much more existential context: a brewing war that threatens to eradicate the English countryside in its entirety, and soon. The play's timing is intentionally ambiguous, thanks in part to Ximena Pinilla's exquisite costumes, which anticipate the eye-popping fashions of the 1920s while adhering to more vintage silhouettes. The set is sparse, with few clues that gesture toward the First World War, and the plain dining chairs suggest Shotover's couches and settees. Within the walls of the Shotover estate, a far less life-threatening kind of trouble hangs in the air. Ellie Dunn, played by Allison Edwards-Crewe, has been invited to a dinner party with her father and rich fiancé. Before long, Captain Shotover makes clear that he may be losing his faculties, and it seems as though he doesn't recognize his daughter Ariadne, who's spent the past 20 years in Australia. Party hostess Hesione, played by Julia Course, spends her days toying with the women who fall in love with her husband Hector, played by Martin Happer. Unfortunately, one of those women includes Ellie, whose competing feelings for her much older fiancé are clouded by his presumed wealth. Over the course of nearly three hours in total, we watch the various couples profess their love for one another, only to yank their affections back when they're not reciprocated. Their champagne problems chafe with Shaw's usual brand of social critique, but when the group's comeuppance crash-lands into Shotover's back garden, the kaboom is powerful, if not quite enough to justify the second part's runtime. Carroll's production is one of high highs (the performances) and low lows (the length). While I wouldn't recommend it for most casual attendees of the Shaw Festival, Carroll's twist on the play's damnation of the English aristocracy is intriguing, if not altogether successful. Much like that mechanical turtle in the final act, the play requires patience and curiosity – values that the ritzy inhabitants of the Shotover residence could do worse than to find themselves. In my opinion, Heartbreak House is a thought-provoking play that offers a unique perspective on the human condition. It is a play that requires patience and curiosity to fully appreciate, and it is a testament to the power of art to challenge and inspire. The play's commentary on societal norms and its exploration of the human condition make it a must-see for anyone interested in the performing arts. Personally, I think that Heartbreak House is a masterpiece that deserves to be seen and appreciated by a wider audience. What makes this particularly fascinating is the way in which Shaw uses the backdrop of a brewing war to explore the human condition. The play's timing is intentionally ambiguous, and the costumes and set design add to the sense of uncertainty and ambiguity. In my opinion, the play's genius lies in its ability to frame the human drama within a much more existential context, and to challenge the audience to think deeply about the nature of human relationships and societal norms. From my perspective, Heartbreak House is a play that demands to be seen and appreciated, and it is a testament to the power of art to challenge and inspire.
